Care at McLean Fernside

Fernside is McLean Hospital’s nine-bed residential addiction programme in Princeton, Massachusetts. It serves adults aged 18 and over with serious substance misuse, including people whose care is complicated by depression, anxiety, trauma or other psychiatric conditions. Detoxification is arranged before admission when needed rather than presented as an on-site Fernside service.

Care and programme

The seven-day-a-week programme is led by a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and residential counsellors. Treatment may include relapse-prevention CBT, DBT, motivational enhancement, integrated group therapy, medication evaluation and management, family or couples meetings and fitness or expressive activities.

Accommodation

Fernside occupies a renovated nineteenth-century mansion on 15 private acres of lawns, gardens and woodland. Each resident receives a private room with en-suite bathroom, meals, housekeeping and access to a fitness studio and art studio.

Admissions questions

The provider recommends at least 30 days and publishes a self-pay fee of $70,500 for 30 days. Applicants should confirm that price at enquiry, included and excluded services, any required pre-admission detox, medication costs, family participation and the clinical plan for emergencies or hospital transfer.

Continuing care

Fernside develops an individual aftercare plan with the patient and, with permission, family and outside clinicians. Its alumni programme includes weekly groups and continued contact with programme staff; applicants should ask how local therapy, prescribing and peer support will be established at home.
